El Salvador has two seasons, dry and wet.
The dry season of November through April typically sees offshore winds, sunny skies and consistent surf in the chest to head high range. Although less frequent then in the wet season, large swells do roll through this time of year. (more…)

Access to San Vicente volcano can be achieved by different routes, but in all cases a 4WD vehicle is necessary and hiring a local person as a guide is suggested because the paths up to the summit are difficult to identify. (more…)

San Salvador volcano has probably the most accessible summit crater in El Salvador, due to its proximity to the city of San Salvador. The best way to get there is to drive to Santa Tecla via the Pan American highway. At the second traffic light turn right (due south)and follow the road up to a “zona marginal” or shanty town. A dirt road starts there, climbing almost to the summit and across to the other side of the volcano. (more…)

To get to the summit of San Miguel volcano you have to take the Pan American highway east to the city of San Miguel. At approximately 130 km take the exit south to the small town of Las Placitas. About three quarters of the way up to Las Placitas there is a small school and next to it an entrance to Finca Santa Isabel. Permission from the administrator of the property should be obtained before entering. (more…)

The Ilopango caldera is another very accessible place because of its importance as a tourism site. There are several places where you can obtain an overall view of the lake, however the best is probably from the amusement park at the top of San Jacinto dome. (more…)

Lake Coatepeque is a main tourist attraction in El Salvador and for that reason access to it is very easy. From San Salvador drive along the Pan American highway west to the city of Santa Ana. At a distance of approximately 40 km a roadside market by the name of El Congo marks the exit to the lake. Drive south along this road until you reach the rim of the caldera. (more…)

Access to Izalco by car has been made easy by the construction of a paved road to the Hotel de la Montaqa in the Cerro Verde National Park.Leaving San Salvador take the Panamerican highway west to Santa Ana. Turn off at the Lago de Coatepeque exit, then follow the signs to Cerro Verde. The road goes around the rim of the Coatepeque caldera, offering excellent views of the caldera lake and surrounding volcanoes. When you arrive at the Cerro Verde National Park you can leave your car (for a small fee) at the hotel’s parking lot. (more…)
